Another U.S. city commits to 100 percent clean energy

Another U.S. city had joined many others in committing to using 100 percent clean energy.

The Saint Petersburg City Council recently approved the effort, and will be the first city in Florida (and the 20th city in the country) to make such a commitment. The decision is another success for the Sierra Club’s #ReadyFor100 challenge, which is urging mayors across the country to commit to 100 percent clean energy.

Per the Sierra Club:

“For a variety of reasons and in diverse circumstances, public officials and community leaders see the transition from dirty fossil fuels to clean energy not as an obligation but as an opportunity. Cities powered by 100% clean energy save taxpayer dollars, help their residents save money, create good jobs, and foster a better quality of life. They are catalysts for a new economy and clean energy future.”

California cities are ahead of the curve when it comes to clean energy. San Diego recently became the largest U.S. city to commit to 100 percent clean energy. San Francisco has made a similar commitment along with other U.S. cities, including Burlington, VT and Aspen, CO, showing that the 100 percent clean energy is the new standard for climate leadership. The Sacramento Metro Area is currently ranked 11th in clean energy. Aztec Solar encourages more California cities to follow suit and commit to 100 percent clean energy.

Solar energy is one of the most popular clean energy resources. The strength of the solar industry was recently highlight by a report by the International Energy Agency that showed that solar, along with wind, dominates in the category of electricity generation around the world.
