What do you need to know before switching to solar?

Switching to solar can be a tough decision. That’s why it’s important to be educated before you go solar. We have put together a solar buyers’ guide for your review (download it here), but here are some quick answers to frequently asked questions to help guide you through the process:

Can I really get paid by my utility company?

Yes! Believe it or not, you really can get paid by switching to solar. When you sign up for Net Energy Metering, you can sell your unused energy back to your power company. The amount paid back to you however depends on when you sign up. Currently, when you purchase solar, you will qualify for NEM 1.0, which will pay you more and allow you to avoid potential fees. NEM 2.0 will be implemented soon, however, and will unfortunately pay less and may have fees for new solar customers. Get the scoop from our blog here.

Will my electric meter actually spin backwards?

It really can! When you sign up for Net Energy Metering, you are selling your unused energy back to the power company. If you’re not using as much energy as your solar panels are making, your meter can start to spin backwards.

How much will I pay per month?

This is the golden question – the one most solar customers want to know. Solar has never been more affordable than it is now, but the cost for your system depends on your energy needs along with several other factors. There are also several different purchase options, from paying cash to getting a low interest loan.

But no matter how you end up paying for your system, you should actually spend less each month because the payment for your solar system will be less than your monthly power bills!

How do I know if my home is a good candidate?

This is another extremely important question. Generally, most homes are great for solar. The best homes have little to no shade on them throughout the day. In our area, the sun is always in the southern part of the sky. The good news is that you don’t always have to install panels on your roof. If you have a very shady roof, but have an area on your property that isn’t shady, you can get panels installed off of your home. During your free consultation, we will come to your home and assess what your options are and what the best location would be for optimum savings.
