For some, summer time means higher utility bills

The region’s utility provider switched to its “Time-of-Day” rates in June, increasing the cost of electricity between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. During these hours, demand for electricity is at its highest. That’s why customers are encouraged to cut back or pay a little more for electricity use in the evening.

Time-of-Day rates and higher prices continue through the end of September.

Time-of-Day rates include peak hours and mid-peak hours. During mid-peak hours, the cost for electricity is lower than peak hours but more expensive than off-peak hours. Off-peak hours run from 12 a.m. to 12 p.m. and mid-peak hours start at noon and end at 5 p.m. during the work week.

Peak hour pricing, which begins at 5 p.m., is the most expensive. Some customers pay up to twice the amount they would have if they used their electricity during the earlier parts of the day. Utility companies must crank up their electricity production during these high-demand hours. They pass on the additional costs to their customers.
