SMUD raises rates – again

The trend continues – SMUD is raising its rates again.

SMUD has approved future rate increases for both residential and commercial customers. Plus, it also created a new time-based rate called residential Time-of-Day Rate (5 – 8 p.m. peak). Meaning, you will now be charged higher rates during peak hours. With summers getting hotter, a higher energy bill for air conditioning is inevitable, and in some cases, unaffordable in the Sacramento region.

These higher energy rates mean that there is no better time than now to invest in solar installation to mitigate higher electricity bills. With solar installation you can benefit from Net Energy Metering (NEM). NEM is a special billing arrangement with SMUD that provides credit to customers with a solar power system for the full retail value of the electricity their system generates. A customer only pays SMUD if they exceed the maximum amount of electricity they get from their solar system. Any unused electricity flows back into SMUD’s grid and reflects as a credit on your electricity invoice. Meaning, the only time you get charged for electricity is when you’ve consumed your solar energy supply and dip into SMUD’s energy supply.

A solar power system is a great investment to reduce your future utility bills, it is also a great investment for the value of your home. In a state like California, for example, a small 5-kilowatt (kW) system can add an average of $29,555 to the value of a medium-sized home. According to The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, each additional $1 in energy bill savings (from your solar installation) adds $20 to your home’s total value. As utility rates increase, electricity savings grow over time, so even if you never sell your home, your solar power system installation fully pays for itself many times over. If you do decide to sell, you draw a higher premium, which more than covers the initial cost of installing solar panels.
