In 2019, about 184 gigawatts of new renewable power capacity was added to the world’s energy arsenal, according to the report. This remarkable growth occurred despite modest investment increases in the green technology sector, indicating that solar power is as affordable and accessible as it’s ever been.

For perspective on cost, consider that in the second half of 2019, the generation of solar electricity was 83 percent less expensive than a decade ago. There’s still a lot of work to do. Globally, about 13.5 percent of electricity is generated from renewable sources. That’s up from 12.4 percent in 2019 and just 5.9 percent in 2009, according to the United Nations.
To meet the goals outlined in the 2015 Paris climate agreement aimed at keeping average global temperatures from increasing more than 2°C, some 3,000 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity will be needed within a decade.
